If a friend or acquaintance of mine was in the same situation Ana is in at this point in Fifty Shades of Grey, I would be concerned. Even if Ana wasn’t about to enter into a potentially abusive relationship, I’d be worried about her. Her self-esteem is frighteningly poor.
I feel a little silly for caring so much about the fate of a character from a book I actively dislike. Perhaps I can excuse myself somewhat by saying that since Ana is something of a self-insert, my worries about her are an extension of my worries about E.L. James.
